Before you Pack Another Thing, Do this First

Moving is the perfect time for a fresh start! Decluttering before you pack means fewer things to move, less to unpack, and more room for what you actuallly love in you new home.

Why Decluttering

Before Your Move Can Save You Time, Energy, and a Whole Lot of Unpacking

There is something about moving that makes us suddenly realize how much stuff we own. You can live peacefully in your house for years thinking everything is perfectly normal. Then moving day gets closer. You open that hall closet. And apparently you’ve been running an unofficial storage facility since 2017. There are clothes nobody wears, mystery cords that belong to electronics you no longer own, three half-used rolls of wrapping paper, toys the kids outgrew years ago and at least one item that makes you ask:

“Why do we even HAVE this?”

Here’s the thing: you don’t have to move it.

In fact, one of the smartest things you can do before packing your first tote is declutter.

Every Item You Keep Creates More Work

When deciding whether to keep something, remember that you’re not simply deciding whether you want to own it. You’re also deciding whether you want to: pack it, carry it, transport it, unload it, find a place for it, and eventually unpack it. Suddenly that random kitchen gadget you haven’t touched in four years doesn’t seem quite so precious. The less unnecessary stuff you take with you, the easier nearly every part of your move becomes.

Try the Four-Pile Method

You don’t need an elaborate organization system. Choose one small area—a closet, cabinet, dresser or bookshelf—and create four categories:

KEEP: Things you regularly use, genuinely need or truly love.

DONATE: Items that are still in good condition but no longer serve you.

RECYCLE: Items that can be responsibly recycled rather than thrown away.

TOSS: Broken, expired or unusable items that have reached the end of the road.

Then make the decision before the item ever reaches a moving tote. That’s the important part. Don’t pack something because you’ll “decide later.” Later is how you end up standing in your new garage six months from now looking at the exact same stuff.

Start With the Easy Stuff

Decluttering your entire house in one Saturday sounds productive. It also sounds like an excellent way to get overwhelmed and quit by lunchtime. Instead, start small. Try one bathroom cabinet tonight. Tomorrow, tackle one closet. Then do a kitchen drawer. Once you start seeing bags leaving the house and empty space appearing, the process gets much easier. Save sentimental items for later. Starting with Grandma’s photo albums is a guaranteed way to spend two hours sitting on the floor reminiscing instead of packing.

Don’t Accidentally Move Your Donation Pile

This sounds obvious until moving day gets chaotic. Once you’ve decided what you’re donating, get it out of your moving area. Put donations directly into your vehicle or designate one clearly separated area. If you’re donating locally in the DFW area, check the organization’s current accepted-item guidelines before loading your vehicle. Different donation centers may accept different household items. The goal is simple: once you’ve decided something isn’t coming to the new house, don’t let it sneak its way back into the move.

Your New Home Doesn’t Need Your Old Clutter

Moving can be stressful, but it also gives you something you don’t get very often: a natural reset button. You’re already touching almost everything you own. You’re already deciding where things belong. You’re already creating a new space. Take advantage of it. Imagine arriving at your new home knowing that nearly everything you’re unpacking is something you actually use, need or love.

That’s a very different experience from opening a tote and thinking: Why did I bring this?!

At Zip-E Tote Rentals, we want your DFW move to feel simpler from packing day through unpacking day. Our reusable black totes with yellow lids make packing sturdy and stackable—but the easiest tote to carry will always be the one you didn’t need to pack in the first place.

So before you fill that next tote, ask yourself one question: “Do I want this enough to unpack it again?”

If the answer is no?

Let it go.

Move lighter. Live brighter. Zip-Easy.
